International Rock-Flipping Day, September 2, 2007

Just an almost last minute reminder that International Rock Flipping Day looms before us — Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008. I very much encourage you to visit Marcia Bonta’s excellent nature blog to read more about it. Great photos! Also, visit Dave Bonta’s International Rock Flipping Day file.

For those who didn’t participate last year, here’s a quick account of what will happen on Sunday.

Everyone who wishes to participate will go out to their yard, or any place they like, and carefully lift a stone or rock of any desired size, to see what lies beneath. After you’re finished observing or photographing your find, you should carefully put the stone back in place to that any inhabitants of that space will be sheltered once more.

If you’re a blogger, you can post your photos, drawings, or writings about what you found. Then, you should send a link to your post to Dave, so that he can include your blog in the listing of participants. That list will be posted to his and other blogs.

If you don’t have your own blog, please visit and feel free to post your images on the special International Rock Flipping Day Gallery that was created last year.

So, help to carry on this new tradition. I’ll look forward to seeing or hearing about what all of you have discovered beneath a rock somewhere near you.
